ELLIPTICAL CONSTRUCTION

There are 4 (four) kinds of elliptical construction:

1. Positive Sentence
Pola : _____ and S + auxiliary too
_____ and so + auxiliary + S

Example:
The teacher comes early
The students come early
The teacher comes early and the students do too
The teacher comes early and so do the students

2. Negative Sentence
pola : _____ and s + auxiliary (not) + either
_____ and neither + auxiliary + s

Example:
The postman can’t drive a car
The gardener can’t drive a car
The postman can’t drive a car and the gardener can’t either
The postman can’t drive a car and neither did the gardener

3. Contrast Sentence
Pola : _____ but S + auxiliary
_____ but S + auxiliary (not)

Example:
• The writer never uses the camera
• The typist ever uses the camera
The writer never uses the camera but the typist does

• The head master gave the speech
• The teacher didn’t give the speech
The headmaster gave the speech but the teacher didn’t


4. Be Formed By Omitting the Same Words Between Two Sentences

Example:
• My father comes from Japan
• My mother comes from Japan
• My father and my mother come from Japan
