Adjective Phrase

Example:
1. She is so beautiful that everyone likes her
2. She is so beautiful girl that everyone likes her
3. She is such a beautiful girl that everyone likes her
4. The coffee is too hot to drink
5. The coffee is too hot for me to drink
6. The lamp is high enough to reach
7. The lamp is high enough for Andy to reach

Preference

prefer _____ to _____
like _____ better than _____
would rather _____ than _____
would prefer _____ rather than _____

Example:
1. I prefer staying home to going out
2. I prefer eating apples to pineapples
3. I prefer apple to pineapple
4. I like staying home better than going out
5. I like eating apples better than pineapple
6. I like apples better than pineapples
7. I would rather stay at home than go out
8. I would prefer to stay home rather than go out

Subjunctive

Subjunctive merupakan suatu pengandaian ataupun angan-angan untuk mengungkapkan kenyataan yang bertentangan dengan kenyataan sesungguhnya. Subjunctive dapat kita bagi dalam 3 (tiga) bentuk :

1. FUTURE subjunctive

pola: s + wish + (that) + s + would / could

Example:

  1. I wish I could help Joni (I can’t help Joni)
  2. I wish you would stop saying that (you won’t probably stop)

2. PRESENT subjunctive

Pola: s + wish (that) + s + v2 / were

Example:

  1. she wishes I were at her birthday party now (I am not at her birthday party now)
  2. I wish I knew her phone (I don’t know her phone)
  3. I wish he didn’t come (he comes)

3. PAST subjunctive

Pola: s + wish (that) + s+ had v3 / had been

Example:

  1. She wished that she had enough money (she didn’t have enough money)
  2. I wish you had come yesterday (you didn’t come yesterday)
  3. We wished he hadn’t been involved in that robbery ( he was involved in that robbery)

Note: di samping pengunaan subjunctive wish di atas, kita juga bisa menggunakan subjunctive:

  • as if / as though
  • if only
  • would rather

Example:

  1. He acted as if he had know the answer (he didn’t know the answer)
  2. We would rather john gone to class yesterday (John didn’t go to class yesterday)
  3. If only I were a president (I’m not a president)
